Property company fined for new Fire Law breaches

A property company has been successfully prosecuted after breaches of new fire laws were exposed by a Fire and Rescue Service investigation. Munro Importers Ltd pleaded guilty to nine fire safety offences, including: failure to produce a suitable Risk Assessment; wedged open fire doors; blocked and obstructed exit routes; restricted aisles and gangways; and inadequate Fire Safety Training.

The court heard that breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order placed 22 employees, and members of the public, at significant risk if a fire occurred and fined the company £20,000 plus £7,000 costs.

A recent survey of UK fire risk assessors, by Fireco Ltd. manufacturers of Dorgard, revealed nearly 70 % of workplaces audited for fire risk were illegally wedging open fire doors. In a real fire emergency a wedged open door will allow smoke and flames to spread rapidly with the risk of life-threatening injuries.

Fireco - the UK's leading specialists in fire prevention, fire safety and fire consultancy - are fire consultants to a number of major UK commercial organisations, assisting them to meet their responsibilities for Fire Risk Assessment through the company's Training and Consultancy services.
