How DMS Works

When a deaf or hard of hearing person enters a building where DMS is installed, they will see clear signage asking them to text a location code to the DMS number.

Once a connection text has been sent, the person will be connected to the DMS service for that location. After 12 months they will receive a text asking them to reconnect. Just to let you know that connection text costs the same as a standard SMS text.

In the event of a fire and the fire alarm sounding, the DMS controller which is hardwired into the Fire Panel, will trigger a process that within seconds sends a text message to all the people connected to that location.

Operating DMS during a fire bell test

The DMS controller is fitted with an inhibitor button, allowing a location's fire alarm to be tested as needed without alerting those individuals connected to that location. Once pressed, the DMS is de-activated for a period of 5 minutes allowing the fire alarm to be tested.

Operating DMS

  • Prior to activating the fire alarm the inhibitor button should be pressed. The yellow LED will begin to flash
  • The fire alarm can then be activated
  • After 5 minutes the yellow LED will stop flashing and the DMS controller will once again be active Prior to activating the fire alarm the inhibitor button should be pressed. The yellow LED will begin to flash
