Dorgard closes the door on care home fire

38 people were evacuated following a fire at Freshfields Nursing Home in Plymouth on Wednesday, October 15 2008. A TV had caught fire in the home’s upstairs communal lounge, filing the building with dense smoke and creating potential danger for both staff and residents.

Fortunately, the nursing home had implemented fire safety measures that included the installation of Dorgard fire door hold open devices, to safeguard staff and elderly residents.

Both the fire door to the communal room where the fire started and the door to a resident’s room were fitted with Dorgards allowing them to be held open without breaching the nursing home's stringent fire safety guidelines.

Su Fuller Freshfields Administration Manager comments: 'The containment of the smoke was very effective, even though breathing apparatus had to be used by fire fighters for the complete evacuation. In the circumstances, the evacuation was effected smoothly, and the fast action of the Dorgards meant that our Emergency Plan was implemented according to the fire safety measures we had put in place.' Dorgard is the wireless solution that offers the the simplest, most cost-effective way of legally holding open fire doors in any position, and automatically releasing them when the fire alarm sounds.

There are more than 275,000 Dorgards installed across the UK. Dorgard is the solution to the illegally wedged open fire door problem. Dorgard complies fully with all relevant British Standards and EU Directives.
